We started visiting New Buffalo in 1974 when Rita’s aunt bought a house on the lake at 1510 Shore Dr. We fell in love with the area and moved our 26’ Sea Ray to the New Buffalo harbor in 1980. We spent almost every summer weekend on the boat with our two daughters . We have four grandchildren ; 2 live in Algonquin, Illinois and 2 live in Jackson Hole , Wyoming.
Ron retired from LUCENT technologies in 2009 after spending more than 40 years in the telecommunication business with AT&T, NCR, LUCENT, and Alcatel. Rita began her career as a medical technologist and later as a special education teacher. She also retired in 2009.
We finally put our Naperville house on the market this July and plan to spend more ( permanent) time in New Buffalo going forward.
Ron is on the board of the New Buffalo Shoreline Alliance and the Great Lakes Coalition, both concerned with improving the health of our shorelines and restoring beaches that have been eroded. He has been SSPOA president for the last 10 years.
We love Sunset Shores and we want to help make it a safe and prosperous community.
We “discovered” New Buffalo 16+ years ago after successfully winning a night at the Harbor Grand in a silent auction. We were living in Chicago at the time and were enchanted by this charming town, a fun dinner at the Stray Dog and how close, but far away it was from home. That one fateful weekend trip turned into a what has clearly become an obsession with our small town! It started with building a house in the Merchant Street Cottages (that we now rent out) and then we bought a house on Shore Drive with amazing Lake Michigan views. Bart is a lawyer and Missy is a consultant and while we were able to navigate remote work during the pandemic, we realized that life was too precious to split time (and sit in traffic) between Chicago and New Buffalo. We sold our Chicago house and made Michigan and Sunset Shores our forever home. We have a 28 year old daughter that lives in Chicago. This picture is from the day we moved into our home (plastic champagne glasses and a beautiful view!)
